Carnival Music
Guadeloupean Carnival became an official institution in 1980. Carnival festivities begin the first Sunday of January. During the parade, recycled items are used as music instruments: bottles and cans of different sizes are hit with a wooden stick, calabashes are used for “Chacha”, conches are used as wind instruments etc…
There are different Carnival groups depending on several musical styles :
-« Groupes a Cuivre » uses artisanal instruments
– « Groupes à Peau » uses small drums covered with animal skin, as well as whips and other traditionnal instruments.
-« Groupes de Synthetiseurs »: in addition to traditional instruments, this group uses more modern instruments such as synthesizers, bass…
Every year there are new melodies and styles and Carnival Music is constantly evolving.
